Ipswich Underground

Art

Made in Suffolk is our way of shining a light on the artists shaping this region –
past and present.
The ones pushing boundaries, carving their own paths, and proving there’s far more to Suffolk than meets the eye.

Suffolk-born artist Maggi Hambling didn’t just paint the coast – she exposed its force. Through turbulent seascapes, bold texture, and unapologetic expression, her work fills the canvas with tension and movement.

From Aldeburgh’s Scallop to her relentless Walls of Water, Hambling spent decades reminding us that art doesn’t have to behave – she’s an artistic force, the kind we believe deserves to be seen, celebrated, and talked about.

Here’s a spotlight on a Suffolk artist who’s never been anything but bold.

Adrian Scoffield is an Ipswich-based artist whose work moves fluidly between printmaking, photography, and painting.

His work is defined by rich tonal layering, nuanced colour, and subtle shifts in mood. Whether working in bold, expressive palettes or quieter studies of light and shadow, Adrian creates images that feel grounded, immersive, and quietly otherworldly.

Artist, writer, and long-time custodian of culture, Anthony J. Hughes works at the intersection of memory and imagination. Drawing from decades spent inside archives and institutions, his practice reimagines fragments of the past-transforming incomplete texts, images, and histories into something entirely new.

Measured, poetic, and deeply considered, his work doesn’t preserve history – it reshapes it.

Itchy Valentine is a multidisciplinary artist and creative arts educator, working across design, writing, music, painting, photography and visual storytelling.

Shaped by a life spent in places less traveled, and working within communities across different cultures, her practice is rooted in lived experience and human connection.

Restless, curious, and never confined to one medium her work is drawn to moments, emotion and people. It’s expressive, instinctive, and often a little defiant.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t planned.

We met Robert Lenny by chance, sharing a quiet pint just after he’d heard the news of losing his best friend. What followed was a honest conversation about friendship, creativity, and the kind of encouragement that shapes a person’s path.

We spoke about Richard – not just the loss, but the force he was in Rob’s life. The one who pushed him forward, believed in his words, and helped carve out his voice as a poet.

A reminder that behind the work, there are always people who made it possible.
