Ipswich Underground

Artist: The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Album; Their Satanic Majesties
Release: 1996
Era: peak 90s underground psych revival

This is a cheat as it’s one of my favourite 90’s bands and this particular record was a gift from my partner few months ago. It’s on here simply because I love it.

Think methodic drone rock / 60’s psychedelia accompanied by tambourines and sitars.

For those who don’t know BJM, they rock an Eastern, boho, hypnotic, immersive, almost time-warped sound that’s complemented by the sex appeal of psych droning, rustic guitar.

They definitely pack a theatrical vintage twang, like some gritty-hippy roadside circus.

For me, they are the sound of desert air drifters, star-gazing campfire nudists, stoned philosophers on sun-washed tarmac, sweat, beards, and spiritual paradigms. – Suppose that’s why I like them.

Extra Note: If you’ve got a thing for woozy, 90s psych/prog haze like Mazzy Star or the tribal, psychedelic bedlam of GOAT, do yourself a favour and drop the needle on some BJM, they seem to splice up those vibes with a warbly, jaded ‘60s wash – that’s sunburnt, mystic and very vintage dirtbag. Even the raspy, battered effects on the album makes the record sound like it’s been rescued from the back of your Uncle Benny’s caravan.
