EG Ipswich Sea Shanty Crew LIVE | Orwellermen at Isaacs on the Quay (Supporting Full Circle Project)

It was a powerful afternoon of music and community at Isaacs on the Quay, as Ipswich sea shanty crew The Orwellermen brought maritime tradition back to life in support of a meaningful cause.

The Orwellermen are a local group who meet regularly at The Steamboat Tavern, performing traditional sea shanties—songs once sung aboard ships on the River Orwell and across the North Sea. Historically used to keep time during long voyages, these songs now live on through performances across Suffolk’s pubs and waterfront spaces.

This performance took place in support of the Full Circle Project, a fundraising expedition organised by Turn to Starboard, aiming to raise £50,000 for military veterans.

The project involves a 2,000 nautical mile journey around the UK—over 3,700 kilometres—designed to support veterans through shared experience, challenge, and recovery at sea.

Although the tall ships expected to arrive in Ipswich were unable to dock due to port access restrictions, the Orwellermen still performed—lending their voices in recognition of the journey and the cause.

Their performance reflects something deeper within Ipswich’s creative and cultural identity—where music, history, and community continue to come together in shared spaces.

Why This Matters!

Groups like the Orwellermen play an important role in preserving local heritage—keeping maritime traditions alive not through archives, but through live performance, storytelling, and community connection.

From sailor’s tales to maritime mishaps, their music carries history in a way that feels immediate, human, and accessible.
